A traditional “monogram” includes three letters with the first name initial on the left, the last name initial in the middle (larger in the center), and the middle name initial on the right, ex. Mary Kate Smith = mSk.

A traditional “initial monogram” is the first name initial on the left, middle initial in the middle and the last initial on the right (all the same size and font), ex. Mary Kate Smith = MKS . Men often choose to do an initial monogram (first, middle, last).

For a “couple monogram” the woman’s first initial traditionally come first (left side), the family name initial next (center), and the man’s initial last (right side), ex. John and Kate Smith = kSj.

Finally, ”two-letter monograms” may be used if there is no middle name, just for style or for a couple using both first name initials.
